Who are we?
We're a small group of Central Texas homeowners who got tired of choosing between two suboptimal options for protesting our property taxes: giving 25–40% of our savings to a protest agency, or spending 40+ hours ourselves gathering comps and building documentation. Getting a fair appraisal shouldn't cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, and it shouldn't take becoming a part-time expert in appraisal law to get there. That's why we started Citizens Tax Protest Project.
We built this tool to make it easier to protest our own property taxes. After it worked for us, and after seeing how much time and money it saved, we decided to open it up for other Texans to use too, for free. Our goal is to give every Texas homeowner the knowledge, guidance, and tools they need to protest their own appraisal. You already have the legal right to challenge your assessment. We want to make sure you have the resources you need to actually do it.
Take a look at our blog to learn how the process works (it's simpler than it sounds), then generate your own customized protest documentation. The best place to start is our free tool — enter your address to see how your appraisal compares to similar homes nearby and find out how much you might save by protesting yourself. One thing to know: our documentation currently supports the Unequal Appraisal protest mechanism only. If the data doesn't show a strong case for your property, it may be worth looking into a professional tax protest service to see if they can find an angle you can't.
How do we fund the project?
We're entirely community-funded (think Wikipedia) and run on small donations from the homeowners we help. There's a real cost to building and maintaining this site, so if it saved you money, or you'd like to help us expand to more Texas counties or add recent sales data (MLS comps), we hope you'll chip in. It's completely optional, though - don't let cost be a reason not to use the tool.
